Synthesis of new partially hydrogenated carbazoles

Abstract

Bromination of 2,5-dimethyl-, 2-methoxy-, and 2-methyl-6-(cyclohex-2-en-1-yl)-N-(p-tolylsulfonyl)anilines in the presence of a base gave the corresponding N-(p-tolylsulfonyl) derivatives of 1-bromo-, 1,5-dibromo-, and 1,6-dibromo-1,2,3,4,4a,9a-hexahydrocarbazoles which underwent dehydrobromination to 3,4,4a,9a-tetrahydrocarbazole derivatives on heating in piperidine.
