Kinetics of the Extraction of Long-Lived Fission Products Present in Spent Nuclear Fuel: a Study by Attenuated Total Reflection IR Spectroscopy

Radiochemistry Aims and scope

Abstract

A procedure for studying the extraction kinetics of components of long-lived spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste by recording the IR absorption spectra in the attenuated total reflection geometry was developed. The procedure was applied to the extraction of Eu(NO3)3 with triamylphosphine oxide (TAPO) and octyl(phenyl)-N,N-diisobutylcarbamoylmethylphosphine oxide (CMPO). The extraction rate constant was calculated for the system with TAPO. A mechanism of the interaction of CMPO with Eu3+ ions was suggested.
