Abstract
The frequency dependence of the impedance of the neon discharge in a conical tube is measured. The measured curves depend on the direction of the discharge current. For the interpretation of such variations, we comprehensively study the discharge in the conical tube for both directions of the discharge current. The numbers of direct and stepwise ionization events are calculated for both cases. In the discharge that gets narrower towards the anode, the direct ionization dominates, the impedance is inductive, and the impedance curve is in qualitative agreement with the impedance loci that are constructed for the cylindrical discharges in the regime of direct ionization. For the opposite direction of the discharge current, the stepwise ionization dominates, the real part of impedance is negative at low frequencies (i.e., the discharge exhibits the negatron properties), and the active component decreases to zero with increasing frequency and, then, increases to the level that is equal to the resistivity of the column with respect to direct current. The reactive component of the impedance is inductive.
