Characteristics of hydrogen bonds in D-glucose

Abstract

The vibrational spectrum of crystalline glucose in the region of absorption frequencies characteristic of hydroxyl groups has been studied. It is found that the observed spectrum admits deconvolution into five Lorentz components, which corresponds to the number of hydroxyl groups, with a mean square deviation of 0.99. A frequency shift of the deconvolution components relative to the absorption frequency of a hydroxyl group not involved in hydrogen bonding has been determined and used for estimating the H-bond length and energy of formation. Various correlation relations between H-bond lengths and energies, on one hand, and the absorption frequencies of hydroxyl groups, on the other hand, have been compared.
