Abstract
A theory of nonlinear surface waves is constructed for a dielectric-left-handed metamaterial system with optically active impurity atoms present at the interface. The formation of surface breathers under the conditions of self-induced transparency is considered. Explicit analytic expressions for the breathers of surface TM modes are obtained. It is shown that the parameters of the surface optical nonlinear wave depend on the negative magnetic permeability of the metamaterial and on the derivative of this quantity.
