Abstract
Experimental data on the electric explosion of thin wires in air at a current of up to 10 kA growing at a rate of up to 50 A/ns are reported. The possible mechanisms of shock wave generation are analyzed, and differences in the development of secondary breakdown during the explosion of copper and tungsten wires in air are considered. The intervals of the parameters of the medium observed during the explosion-induced shock wave propagation are presented and compared to the estimates based on a model of the shock wave front structure.
