Seasonal Dynamics of the Bird Population of Omsk City

Abstract

The results of year-round bird counts conducted by the authors in the city of Omsk in nine habitats, in five of which studies were performed continuously for three years from September 2006 to August 2009, are analyzed. Nine general seasonal aspects of the bird population are identified using an object-oriented classification, and a brief quantitative description is provided. A comparison with similar data available for other cities of Western Siberia shows that the ornithocomplexes of Omsk are characterized by a significant intraannual differentiation of communities compared to other cities (Novosibirsk, Gorno-Altaisk, Biisk, and Kemerovo). The results of the analyses of the intraannual and interannual dynamics of bird species richness and population density showed that the absence of natural habitats and the large woodland areas near Omsk contribute to a greater stability in the species composition of the bird population in the postbreeding period. Differences in the weather conditions between years, later dates of the onset of winter or earlier spring, do not lead to significant changes in the timing of wanderings and migrations of birds. The interannual differences in the dynamics of bird population density in some habitats are more pronounced than in the city in general, which is determined by differences in the intracity distribution of birds in different years.
