Abstract

Determination and knowledge of the stress-strain state of critical structures and machine parts allows one to take preventive actions. A new approach is proposed to using the laser interferometry method designed to assess residual welding stresses in metal structures. The distinctive feature of this approach is the use of two lasers with different wavelengths simultaneously allowing one to increase the accuracy of the information received. This results in a reduction in the measurement error due to the discreteness of the measurement of residual stresses when counting interference fringes. Improving the measurement accuracy is especially important for cases where the level of residual stresses has relatively small values, for example, post-welding stresses of “light” alloys, shot blasting, and laser surface hardening.
