Abstract
This article is based on the results of the monitoring investigations into the functioning of the Russian language in the world, which were performed in 2004 at the instruction of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in 2011–2012 at the instruction of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science. The data of censuses and national ministries of education, information of Russian centers of science and culture abroad, and expert estimates of the heads of national associations of teachers of the Russian language and literature have been used.
