Abstract

The development of the Vladimir-Suzdal’ Principality, one of the most important phenomena in medieval Russian history, which largely predetermined its further progress, was discussed at a RAS Presidium meeting. The results of research into medieval settlements, which are the most numerous archeological artifacts, were presented by N.A. Makarov, director of the RAS Institute of Archeology. In his opinion, these data will make it possible to elucidate the historical and natural-climatic conditions that underlay the formation of a powerful political center in the northeastern part of the Russian Plain.
