Abstract

An RAS Presidium meeting considered the causes and effects of negative environmental changes in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland, the estuary of the Neva River, whose catchment area hosts a very rapidly developing Russian region. Studies of the Neva estuary ecosystems by the RAS Zoological Institute over more than 20 years have shown that the increased anthropogenic load on the gulf ecosystem, including the growing transportation of energy sources, is coupled with unfriendly climatic factors. This situation necessitates the development of a strategy to control the environment in the eastern Gulf of Finland and to account for the complex dynamics of its ecosystem. This publication is based on the materials of this RAS Presidium meeting.
