Abstract

The response of the ecosystem of Kondopoga Bay, Lake Onego, to changes in anthropogenic load (due to wastewater from the Kondopoga PPM and trout farms) is evaluated in terms of the organic matter destruction index. Statistical analysis was made for the variations of the destruction over 1989–2020. The rate of destruction was measured by light-and-dark-bottle oxygen technique. Reliable estimates show a decrease in the rate of destruction in the period from 1989 to 2020 in the head part of the bay, into which PPM wastewater is discharged. Under the minimal load of wastewater, the median values of destruction under minimal load from wastewater decreased here by a factor of 5 compared with the period of maximal load in 1989–2001. In the central part of the bay, where trout farms are located, the tendency toward a decrease in the rate of organic matter destruction was not significant. The destruction rate decreased here less than by half compared with 1989–2001. The decrease in the rate of organic matter destruction in the central part of the bay is hampered by the operation of trout farms.
