Abstract
The results from experimental and theoretical studies of the effect methane has on processes of the formation and decomposition of ozone in air, photostimulated by radiation with wavelengths λ1 = 123 nm and λ2 = 147 nm, are presented. It is found that at concentrations [CH4] ⩾ 0.01% of methane in air there is a sharp drop in the concentration of photolytic ozone, due to a reduction in its rate of generation as a result of methane participating in the processes of radiation absorption and in reactions between methane and ozone precursors. The role of the investigated processes in the chemistry of the upper and middle atmosphere is discussed.
