Abstract
Carbonyl clusters of general composition Pd x (CO) y Cl z , which are formed when solutions of chloropalladium(II)complexes are exposed to carbon monoxide, are shown to experience spontaneous destruction to yield palladium powder, CO2, CO, and carbon phases, in particular a diamond phase, due to the occurrence of the Boudoir reaction. The diamond is in the form of grains with sizes of ≤1 mm and diamond filaments with diameters of up to ten micrometers and lengths of up to 2 cm.
