Sign of the mixing energy and the possibility of nonequilibrium phase transitions accompanying crystallization

Abstract

Dissipative structures are formed during epitaxy of GaAlAs: atomic ordering competes with compositional self-modulation. It is shown that dissipative structures can form which correspond to the experimental structures and are conditional on a fundamental parameter of the physics of alloys — the sign of the mixing energy.
