Abstract
An electrodiffusion model is used to analyze the behavior of an isolated spherical cell. It is shown that under the influence of fluctuations of the membrane protein density instability may develop, leading to the evolution of ion currents in the cell. Instability thresholds and characteristic harmonic frequencies are determined. General expressions are obtained for the instability thresholds for a system of two spherical cells and an analysis is made of the case of fairly distant cells which allows fundamental qualitative conclusions to be drawn on the nature of the ensuing instabilities.
