Pulsed electromagnetic and acoustic emission accompanying fast crystallization of supercooled water droplets

Abstract

Electromagnetic and acoustic emission was found to accompany crystallization of distilled-water droplets supercooled to −30°C. It was shown that the front of an electromagnetic pulse provides the information on growth kinetics of ice in a supercooled droplet. A mechanism of electromagnetic pulse generation based on the Workman-Reynolds effect is proposed.
