Abstract

A high-current gas-amplification mode in cylindrical detectors is considered as a time sequence of three amplification modes: a proportional mode, a mode of limited proportionality, and a self-quenched streamer (SQS) mode. The probability of a change from the limited proportionality to the SQS mode depends on the degree of ionization of the primary particle, the used gaseous mixture, and the anode diameter. The proposed gas-amplification mechanism complies with the main experimental results. Examples of promising applications of detectors in SQS modes are considered.
