Puccinia hordei on barley and Omithogalum umbellatum in South Australia

Abstract

Aecia of Puccinia hordei were found to occur on Star of Bethlehem (Omithogalum umbellatum, Liliaceae) in pasture paddocks on Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. The plant has become an important weed in some areas and is proving difficult to control. A range of virulence combinations was found in leaf rust collected from the alternate host. The weed appears to be responsible for the outbreak of epidemics of barley leaf rust in the region.
