Factors affecting wet core rot of apples

Abstract

The effects of preharvest and postharvest inoculation of apple fruits with core rot fungi and the relationships between fruit shape and sinus opening on wet core rot were studied. Preharvest inoculation with Mucor piriformis, Penicillium roquefortii and Alternaria sp. did not cause core rot, but postharvest inoculation with M. piriformis and P. expansum caused extensive rot, particularly if spores were applied in a suspension of an emulsifiable concentrate formulation of diphenylamine (DPAec). Sinus opening was inversely related to the fruit length:diameter (L/D) ratio. The incidence of wet core rot of Richared Delicious apple fruits caused by immersion in a DPAec suspension containing P. expansum conidia was 16.6% and 30.6% for fruit with L/D ratios of 0.993 and 0.910, respectively.
