Abstract
Seven fungicides were evaluated in field trials for control of blind seed disease (caused by Gloeotinia temulenta) of Lolium perenne in southern (Birregurra) and northern (Mansfield) Victoria. Propiconazole (125 g a.i./ha), flutriafol (125 g a.i./ha) and benomyl (250 g a.i./ha) gave the best control. The incidence of blind seed was significantly reduced by urea applications at Birregurra, but not at Mansfield. The fungicides were most effective when applied at seed head emergence and at anthesis stages of crop growth. Alternating applications of benomyl and propiconazole, which could be a strategy to minimise the chance of G. temulenta developing fungicide resistance, provided satisfactory control of the disease. Propiconazole is currently registered for control of blind seed disease in Victoria.
