Abstract
Shortly before his death in January 1984, Professor Alfred Kastler, winner of the Nobel Prize for physics in 1966 for his work on optical pumping, submitted to Nature a book review of Masers and Lasers by Mario Bertolotti1. Published here is an edited and abridged version of the review.
