Abstract

THE mechanism of prophage induction by radiation or chemical agents is unknown, although during the past decade a variety of hypotheses have been advanced1–6. Sussman and Ben Zeev7 have presented biochemical data that seem to favour the suggestion that DNA intermediates in repair of DNA damage are competitors with the prophage operators for represser binding. When sufficient represser is bound to these regions none remains for prophage repression and so induction follows7. A consequence of this hypothesis is the prediction that induction should not occur in the absence of these normal repair processes. Here we test and verify this prediction.
