Abstract
RECENT studies have indicated that antiviral action of interferon is triggered by interaction with the cell membrane: Sepharose-bound mouse interferon (IF–Sepharose) retains its antiviral activity, and direct contact with the target cells is necessary to produce the antiviral effect1,2. Cells stimulated by double-stranded polyriboinosinic-polyribocytidylic acid to produce interferon are not protected from viral infection in the presence of interferon antiserum, indicating that interferon acts only after it has left the cells in which it is produced3. The same conclusion has been drawn from experiments with ouabain which inhibits the action, but not the production of primate interferon: cells stimulated to produce interferon fail to become antiviral in the presence of ouabain4.
