Abstract

WE show here that non-rotating, spherically symmetric, general relativistic ‘neutron’ stars of mass ≥ 3M are consistent with the known laws of physics. In particular, for the ‘bag’ model of hadrons, we find Mmax ≃ 3M⊙. The maximum mass for polytropic equations of state is found to be ≃5 M.
