Abstract

THE cell surface has been implicated as a regulation site for cell division in various systems. Enzymatic alteration of the cell surface can initiate DNA synthesis in contact inhibited cells1–3 and changes in membrane components have been correlated with the expression of the transformed phenotype4–10 and with the entry into the S phase of normal cells11. We describe here a system in which the induction into DNA synthesis of a non-dividing cell population is regulated by a factor exteriorised only during the S and mitosis periods at the surface of the producer cells.
