Abstract

THE direct involvement of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and membrane-bound ATPase activity in the active transport of cations in many animal systems is well established. With plants, however, there is still much debate, and it seems that the energy for active ion transport may be derived directly either from ATP or by linkage to electron transport processes. Recent work using giant algal cells has suggested that a compromise situation may exist, for in these plants the cation pumps seem to be powered by ATP while chloride uptake is linked to the photosynthetic electron transport chain1. In this respect, it is interesting that cation-stimulated ATPases have been found in cell wall fractions from several plant species2–5 and cytochemical studies with the electron microscope have shown that this activity is probably associated with the plasmalemma and plasmodesmata of root cells6,7.
