Abstract

PREVIOUSLY1 we mentioned the fact that, in steady simple shear flow, the steady state compliance Je, given, for example, by the ratio of the normal stress P11P22 over the shear stress p21 squared, should increase with molecular weight. For the case of monodisperse polystyrene melts, we showed that this theoretically expected linear relation was found for molecular weights up to about 160,000; no further increase was observed for higher molecular weights.
