Transduction Mechanism in Olfaction and Gustation

Abstract

THE natures of energy transformations between animals and their environments are poorly understood1 and in particular the mechanisms of olfaction and gustation remain unknown2. Here I report evidence which suggests a quinone-quinol (oxidation-reduction) transduction of stimulant energy from olfactory and gustatory chemicals into the nervous system of the beetle, Scolytus multistriatus.
