Abstract

SPANSWICK1 has disputed the validity of the theory of selective K+ ion adsorption in living cells. On the basis of the high activity coefficient of K+ ion as measured by Vorobiev in the cytoplasm of Chara australis and by Lev (and Hinke) in muscle cytoplasm2–4, Spanswick concluded that “practically all the potassium in the cytoplasm is unbound”.
