Abstract
ALTHOUGH D-ribose is a glycogenic substance1, it causes hypoglycaemia in man2,3, rabbit4 and dog5. It has been reported that in man3 and dog5,6 there is an increase in plasma insulin concentration following the infusion of D-ribose. It has also been found in experiments in vitro that D-ribose markedly stimulates the secretion of insulin by isolated rat islets of Langerhans7. We now report that the infusion of D-ribose in the rabbit causes an increase in plasma insulin concentration which precedes the decrease in blood glucose concentration in a fairly uniform manner. We suggest that this secretion of insulin may be an adequate explanation of the hypoglycaemic action of D-ribose even though other effects cannot be excluded.
