Abstract

ADENOSINE occurs naturally in heart muscle as a breakdown product of adenosinetriphosphate (ATP); its concentration in tissue increases during ischaemia and it is believed to play a key part in the regulation of coronary blood flow1–3. Lidoflazine is a newly developed and orally long-acting coronary vasodilator4–6 which, when injected into the right atrium of the anaesthetized dog, potentiates the vasodilating properties of exogenous adenosine7. This communication concerns the enhancement of exogenous adenosine activity in the conscious dog by low oral doses of lidoflazine which, per se, have no significant effect on coronary arterial flow6.
