Abstract

THE Zeeman splitting of the 21 cm line in interstellar neutral hydrogen clouds provides the only direct measure of the line of sight component of the magnetic fields in the interstellar medium. It gives the field strength and direction on the scale of the interstellar gas complexes. The only other technique which gives directions, the Faraday rotation of the emission from the galactic and extragalactic sources, measures only the integrated effect over the line of sight through the galaxy.
