Abstract

SELENIUM is an essential micro-element for animal tissues, which can, however, cause acute and chronic poisoning and even liver tumours when its concentration in food exceeds a few p.p.m. Its specific role is still unknown; it has been suggested that it acts as an anti-oxidant and can prevent epoxidation of unsaturated fatty acids and probably of other unsaturated cell constituents. The small quantities involved in its physiological effects might indicate a more specific role, possibly of a co-factor of some enzyme(s) systems (compare ref. 1).
