Abstract

PHOSPHOLIPIDS are important constituents of cell membranes and constitute up to 40 per cent of the dry weight of the brain. We are at present studying the properties of these molecules, using a variety of physical techniques1 including nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. This is a particularly useful technique since broad line nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy can be used for studying molecular motion in the solid and liquid crystalline condition2, and high resolution techniques3 can be used to study the detailed interactions of these molecules.
