Abstract

DURING the past few years, the uptake of iron by immature red cells in vitro has been studied extensively. Studies have included the kinetics of stromal iron as well as of intracellular iron. Thus Tishkoff1 measured stromal iron after intravenous injection of 59Fe in thalas-saemic patients and also in patients with other diseases. Allen and Jandl2 studied the kinetics of intracellular iron in an in vitro system, using reticulocyte-rich rabbit red cells incubated with 59Fe-labelled plasma, and measured the 59Fe in the stroma, mitochondria, and microsomes. Clark3 used radioactive iron in vivo and in vitro to measure the stromal iron in rat red cells. Falbe-Hansen and Lothe4 studied the stromal iron in rabbit red cells after intravenous injection of 59Fe.
