Abstract

COMPREHENSIVE studies of retention characteristics of gas chromatographic systems, using in particular β,β′-thiodipropionitrile (TDPN) as solvent, have prompted the suggestion that excess concentration of solute at the liquid surface leads to a dependence of retention time on the area to volume ratio of the solvent and in turn on the physical factors which determine this ratio1. Despite the wealth of experimental information1–3, the evidence is not entirely conclusive and could be subject to alternative explanation. We have therefore considered it desirable to examine the behaviour of such systems in a static apparatus. This comprised a combined McBain balance4–deNouy tensiometer5 enclosed in a single well-thermostated chamber. It is hoped to publish details of this elsewhere.
