Abstract
THE biological effects of colchicine have been thoroughly investigated as to its therapeutic effectiveness in gout1, and to its property of inducing metaphase arrest in dividing cells2. Investigations concerning its specific effects on the enzymes which are amenable to histochemical methods have been relatively few. However, alkaline phosphatase3 and uric acid riboside phosphorylase4 have been shown to be decreased at a dose-level of 1 mg/kg. Xanthine oxidase and xanthine dehydrogenase, on the other hand, have been shown to be elevated, following a similar dose, in rat serum5.
