The Variation of Band Gap Width in Zirconium Oxide Powders on Grinding

Russian Physics Journal Aims and scope

Abstract

The variation of band gap width of zirconium oxide powders versus grinding time is considered. It is found that the band gap width increases by 1.4 eV and the grain size decreases from 2.1 down to 1.43 μm in a grinding time of 60 minutes. A comparison between the band gaps of powders with different grain size produced by grinding and sedimentation shows that a mechanical action (for example, processing of pigment powders in ball mills) results not only in a change in grain size but also in an increase in imperfection, which can be estimated from the absorption bands in the diffuse reflectance spectra of powders.
