A method for determining the stress intensity factor of a single edge-notched tensile specimen

Abstract

A straightforward method for determining the stress intensity factor of a single edge-notched tensile specimen with unknown end conditions is presented. It involves the use of measured crack mouth opening displacements, coupled with existing solutions for stress intensity factors and crack opening displacements for uniform tensile loading and for pure bending. The use of the method is demonstrated through experiments on a porous matrix ceramic composite.
