Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of response effort, novelty of stimulus arrangement, and choice on selecting behavior of an individual with profound mental retardation in a vocational setting. Data showed that: (a) novelty of stimulus array, not response effort, affected selecting behavior, and (b) choice affects behavior only to the extent that preferred outcomes are attained. Results are discussed in relation to matching theory.
