Abstract
A method developed earlier for investigating transparent substances using an interference microscope is used to detect polymorphous transformations under pressure. This method is based on measuring the pressure dependence of the refractive index of a crystalline substance within the investigated pressure range and is equivalent to the X-ray method in sensitivity. An abrupt jump in the refractive index or in its derivative within a narrow pressure range points to a phase transition. The change in the refractive index is more pronounced in comparison to a volume change due to a change in the refraction during polymorphous transformations.
