Abstract
Surface-generated gas-phase hydroxyl radicals are formed when H2O and O2 react over La2O3 at 900°C. The addition of CH4 has a strong, negative effect on the production of these radicals, which is attributed to the competition between CH4 and H2O for an active form of oxygen on the surface. At the temperature of these experiments, CO2 had no effect on the formation of OH· radicals.
