Simulating the Response of a Vertical Chirp-Ionosonde Spectrum Analyzer and Reconstructing the Transfer Function in the Translucent Region of the Ionospheric E-Layer

Abstract

We propose a brief scheme for theoretical description of the spectra recorded during ionospheric sounding with a chirp signal and processing the received response using the frequency-compression method. Numerical simulation of vertical-incidence chirp-sounding spectra in the region of near-critical frequencies of the E-layer is carried out by using the analytical expression for the reflectance of radio wave from a multilayer isotropic ionosphere as a transfer function of the channel. A technique for reconstructing the transfer function of the channel using the chirp-sounding spectra recorded for a number of time instants is proposed and tested using the fast Fourier transform.
