Catch Composition of the Tsetse Glossina pallidipes Austen in Revolving and Stationary Traps With Respect to Age, Sex Ratio and Hunger Stage

Abstract

Glossina pallidipes was sampled using biconical traps with stationary and revolving attachments in the form of blue and white flat screens. A modified biconical trap with attachment of four black strips captured the highest number of both female and male G. pallidipes Austen. However, all the stationary traps under-sampled teneral and young tsetse in post-teneral category. Biconical trap attached to a revolving component making 20 rev/min gave the best representative sample with regard to age category of females. Screens making faster revolutions resulted in larger proportions of males and hardly any old females. Flies that visited the trap with revolving screens were non-hungry, and probably mate-seeking. Those in stationary traps were mostly hungry and probably seeking blood meal.

Résumé

On a échantillonné Glossina pallidipes en utilisant des pièges biconiques munis d’accessoires stationnaires et tournants ayant la forme d’écrans plats de couleur bleue et blanche. Un piège biconique modifié avec un accessoire de quatre bandes noires a capturé le plus grand nombre de G. pallidipes Austen mâles et femelles. Cependant, tous les pièges stationnaires n’échantillonnaient pas suffisamment les jeunes tsé-tsé au stade ténéral et post ténéral. Les pièges biconiques attachés à un accessoire tournant à 20 rév/min ont donné l’échantillon le plus représentatif par rapport à la catégorie d’âge des femelles. Des écrans plus rapides entraînaient la capture d’une plus grande proportion des mâles et peu ou pas de vieilles femelles. Les mouches qui visitaient le piège muni d’écrans tournants n’avaient pas faim, et probablement cherchaient des partenaires sexuels. La plupart de ceux qui étaient dans des pièges stationnaires avaient faim et cherchaient probablement du sang.
