Abstract

Herbal medicines are widely used in the treatment of various ailments and also for improving health conditions. Sesbania grandiflora (L.) Pers. is a medicinal plant ground in the tropical region having unique pharmacological applications. Attempts have been made in the past decades to identify and segregate bioactive components from S.grandiflora. However, the available knowledge is inadequate for scientific validation and effective utilization of its bioactive constituents. The major challenge in this path is the isolation of bioactive metabolites, mainly alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, sterols, etc. Some researches revealed the synergistic applications of S.grandiflora metabolites; however, it is still in the beginning stages. This review aims to provide a comprehensive assessment and collection of available information on S.grandiflora and its pharmacological properties. Each part of S.grandiflora has different medicinal properties and each of them is discussed separately. The antioxidant, hepatoprotective, wound healing, antiulcer, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, immunomodulatory, and antiproliferative effects were discussed in detail.
