Notes

  1. The Northumbrian Benedictine monk Bede, writing in his Ecclesiastical History of the English People, puts a story in the mouth of one of King Edwin’s chief counsellors which is intended to convey the brevity and uncertainty of human life. It tells of a sparrow flying from the cold of the night into the warmth of the King’s hall, then immediately out again into the night; the brief sojourn in the light bracketed by an unknown past and an unknowable future.
