Abstract
Being confronted with the commoditization of products and increasing competition, it is the aim of manufacturing companies to offer services in addition to their products to secure their competitive position by an increasing service focus. However, many companies are not able to raise their service share on their own, thus, they join forces with service providers in service networks in order to offer additional services to their customers. Despite the high relevance of this topic, literature on this research area is still scarce. Therefore, this paper addresses a detailed analysis of factors that lead to successful service networks in the context of servitization. In order to identify these success factors, a qualitative study with 29 experts from companies that are part of such service networks was conducted. Based on these expert interviews, we identified 27 different success factors, which were allocated to five categories: strategic, structural, system-based, cultural, and process-based success factors. Furthermore, we identified differences with regard to the success factors in service networks with high integration of the service offer and high interaction of the provider partnership compared to service networks with low integration of the service offer and low interaction of the provider partnership. From these results, one can derive theoretical as well as managerial implications in order to render service networks in the context of servitization successful.
