Abstract

Engineered cementitious composites (ECCs) are a class of advanced materials that have gained significant attention recently due to their unique properties and potential applications in various fields. ECCs are famous for exhibiting unique strain-hardening behaviour under tension and have been, since their inception, increasingly explored for their use in different engineering practices. These materials are composed of cement, fine aggregate, and fibres, which provide them with high strength, ductility, and toughness. In this paper, the authors provide a comprehensive review of the current state of knowledge on the composition and behaviour of ECCs at ambient and elevated temperatures. The review covers aspects of ECCs, including their microstructure, mechanical properties, and durability, as well as the factors that affect their performance. The authors also discuss the potential applications of ECCs and the challenges to their widespread use. The different fibres used by different researchers have been documented, and their role in the unique properties of the different ECC types has been highlighted. Overall, this paper serves as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners working in ECCs and related areas.
