Abstract
The consequent impacts of modernization include adulteration of the environment’s sustainable assets, especially freshwater bodies, including rivers and lakes which in turn significantly affect human and water health. In this study, environmental stress was revealed in water bodies through Palmer's pollution index by collecting and identifying algae from different lakes and rivers of Gujarat, India. The richness of phytoplankton species was estimated in seventeen lakes and five stretches of rivers passing through Gujarat. The Sorenson’s similarity coefficient between the river and lake assemblages, focusing class and genera was calculated ranging from 0.1 to 1.0. A pollution index score was given by assigning a number to the identified algal genera to obtain pollution rating. Findings reveal that Bacillariophyceae was the most prevalent family in both lakes and river stretches, whereas the Fragilariophyceae and Chrysophyceae class, comprised the minimum population in rivers and lakes, respectively. Furthermore, the similarity index of phytoplantons in lakes is less as compared to that of rivers of Gujarat. The presence of genera Chlamydomonas, Euglena, Closterium, Cyclotella, Navicula, Nitzchia, Ocillatoria, Scendesmus, and Synedra indicates the highest organic pollution (ranging from 16–20 and above) in the river Meshwo and Vastral Lake. These noxious genera thrive in lakes and river stretches, producing secondary metabolites or extracellular toxins becoming sufficiently concentrated, and their accidental consumption can result in severe illness. Therefore, it is essential to continuously monitor the surface waters for such noxious phyoplankton besides physicochemical pollution to ensure proper water management.
